Laide Wood is currently undergoing a long term programme of replanting, replacing areas of the Wood that have been lost through wind blow with new trees. During 2008, we planted over 21,000 new trees in the first phase of our replanting operation. Starting in 2009, we will be planting a further 12,000 trees in phase two, which will see most of the clear felled areas re-stocked, this time with mainly native species.

You can be a part of this by sponsoring a tree in this new planting phase. The new plantings will help to create and regenerate a green space for wildlife, and for people. You will be doing your bit for the environment too, as each new tree on average will absorb 3.5 tons of carbon dioxide in its lifetime - that's about a quarter of the average annual emission from one household.

Sponsoring a tree in Laide Wood costs just £15. You can pick from 8 species of tree and we will email you a digital photograph of your sapling, and give you a GPS reference to help you locate it, should you wish to visit the Wood and see how your tree is getting on. Of the 12,000 trees we are intending to plant in 2009, 2,920 trees will be planted in a specially designated area for sponsored trees. This is an area of raised ground overlooking Loch na Cathrach Duibhe (the Loch of the Black Fairy Knoll). This area is shown on the virtual tour map bounded on three sides by the red trail, between points 12 and 17.

To sponsor a tree in Laide Wood, please download the tree sponsorship form (below) and complete and send it to the address on the form.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I identify my sponsored tree?

Each sponsored tree will be given a number, and labelled with an identification tag. The GPS location of the tree will be sent to you, which should guide you to within 10 feet of your tree. Your tree will have an identification tag so that you can tell it apart from its neighbours.

Can I come and see my sponsored tree?

Yes. Laide Wood is open all year round. In the winter, the weather might not be so suitable, and we recommend visiting your tree during the spring or summer, but you can visit it all year round.

What do I receive when I sponsor a tree?

You will receive a certificate in the post, detailing the species, GPS location and identification number of your sponsored tree. You will receive via email a digital photo of your tree, after planting.

What happens if my tree dies?

Our trees are selected and planted by professionals, and should have every chance of growing to maturity. Inevitably, some trees will not. If your tree doesn't take, we will email you and tell you. We will substitute your tree for another, and transfer your identity tag. We will send you the new GPS reference, also via email.

How long will my tree live?

Different species live for different lengths of time, however providing the tree takes and grows properly, your tree should last for many years. Some varieties, such as oak and pine, can grow for many decades.
